Anfernee arrived in the US from Trinidad and Tobago in July of 2019 to pursue a degree in business at Illinois Central College. When IFI staff members picked Anfernee up from the airport he knew very little about them. However, IFI staff and volunteers showed Anfernee that they were always willing to be of assistance. “No words can describe the type of human beings they are as an organization,” he said. Over time, they became like his family.

“I’ve seen many international students develop relationships with IFI where it seemed as if we were their sons and daughters.”

IFI organized events for students like ice skating, mini-golf, scavenger hunts around the city, and cultural events. Many staff and volunteers also came to support his soccer games, a couple of them even going all the way to Texas for his national tournament. “That’s how much they love us.”

“I am writing to extend my sincerest gratitude for the tremendous work you have been doing.”

Overwhelmed with an appreciation for IFI staff and volunteers, Anfernee wrote down his thanks in a letter: “I am writing to extend my sincerest gratitude for the tremendous work you have been doing. I have witnessed the great amount of work and effort you put into each and every semester to make us international students feel comfortable in our environment and to make Peoria, IL our home away from home. You guys are true heroes and I’m glad I had the opportunity to meet all of you. I will never forget any of you!”
